The MUT Design duo of Alberto Sánchez and Eduardo Villalón has become a true design institution in Valencia. Piece by piece, MUT has been creating a spectacular portfolio of collaborations with some of the most attractive brands in the industry, from Sancal to Expormim and Missana. And, in the latest edition of the Hábitat València Fair, the creatives presented their latest collaborations, which have not left anyone indifferent.

Let's look at two of the latest projects by the Valencian duo, ideal additions to their refined portfolio and perfect complements for the most current interiors.

MUT Design, a very bright star

MUT Design was born in 2010 as a small multidisciplinary team. Over the next decade, the duo worked with decoration and design firms, such as Harmony or Expormim, developing eye-catching products. With its colorful, energetic and intelligent perspective, MUT Design has become one of the names to follow on the national and international scene.

However, their projects also take on a much larger scale. Sánchez and Villalón were chosen to design the prestigious Das Haus in Cologne in 2020. During Milan Design Week 2021, they presented their installation Raíces as part of the Alcova festival. In addition, between 2021 and 2022, they were responsible for the "Valencia Pavilion. The future is Design," a brilliant installation that traveled from Madrid to Valencia during the Mediterranean city's election as World Capital of Design.

With all these projects behind them, the young creative duo is more than a new promise, establishing themselves as an essential part of the most avant-garde Spanish design.

Bolet for Omelette Editions

The duo behind MUT Design finds natural inspiration for many of their projects. An excellent example of this is his latest piece, created in collaboration with the brand Omelette Editions: the Bolet armchair.

This simple but intriguing piece takes the shape of a mushroom, which inverts around itself, forming an attractive, comfortable armchair. The inspiration, of course, is the world of mushrooms and, thus, from MUT, they create a chair that could fit into any corner (as if it were a huge mushroom).

The design is elegant and simple, highlighting only a single detail: an elongated button in the center, visually supporting the entire piece. In a way, the design evokes the traditional padding of an old sofa, although completely renovated. But this simple silhouette offers enormous versatility as it could be extended into a two-piece sofa or folded smaller into a tiny chair. The options for this new line are endless.

Michelin, for Missana

During the last edition of the Hábitat fair in Valencia, the Michelin modular sofa (created by MUT Design) was one of the star designs at the Missana stand. This Valencian upholstery firm—with more than two decades of existence—presented a selection of colorful pieces, among which the MUT sofa played a leading role.

Again, the project reflects the duo's inspiration for the organic and natural. And, as the name says, the Michelin sofa pays tribute to the delicate folds of human skin.

The shapes are simple, and the sofa is made up of a single piece, which folds around itself to create the seat and its backrest. The result is a practical and versatile yet visually attractive piece, whether in a vibrantly colored fabric or nude-colored leather ( the original idea of MUT Design).

Other projects from Sancal to Expormim

As Valencia is the home of MUT Design, it is no surprise that some of its most recognizable pieces could be seen among the pavilions of the Hábitat 2023 fair. Apart from its new proposals, firms such as Expormim or Sancal exhibited some of the works created by the Valencian study over the years. Particularly noteworthy is the expansion of the distinctive Twins garden line (which the duo presented in 2015 for Expormim) with a new two-seater sofa and a small bench.

Thus, from its latest creations to some of its most identifiable pieces, the work of MUT Design has left its mark in Valencia as a true essential of its design fair.
