Standard Kitchen Wall Cabinet Height Guide
Not sure how to hang your kitchen cabinets? Here is what you need to know about the different kitchen cabinet sizes and how to hang them.
Wall cabinets are available in several standard heights to accommodate various kitchen layouts and storage needs.
Standard wall cabinet heights
Kitchen wall cabinets are made in these standard sizes:
- 12 inches - Small cabinets for spices or decorative items
- 15 inches - Short cabinets above sinks or windows
- 18 inches - Compact storage for plates and bowls
- 24 inches - Medium height for everyday dishes
- 30 inches - The most popular size for general kitchen storage
- 36 inches - Tall cabinets for maximum storage
- 42 inches - Full-height cabinets that reach 8-foot ceilings
The most used wall cabinet heights in kitchens are 30," 36," and 42."
Installation height from the floor
Wall cabinets are mounted at a standard height, regardless of their size. The bottom of the wall cabinets sits 54 inches from the floor.
This measurement comes from:
- 36" base cabinet height
- 18" backsplash space between the countertop and wall cabinets
With this standard wall cabinet installation height, the top of your cabinets will be:
- 30" cabinet = 84 inches high (7 feet)
- 36" cabinet = 90 inches high (7.5 feet)
- 42" cabinet = 96 inches high (8 feet)
Choosing cabinet height based on the ceiling height
Your ceiling height determines which cabinet size works best:
- 8-foot ceiling: Use 30" or 36" cabinets. A 42" cabinet will touch the ceiling with no space for molding.
- 9-foot ceiling: Use 42" cabinets for maximum storage. You can also stack shorter cabinets or add a second row above standard cabinets.
- 10+ foot ceiling: Stack cabinets or use 42" cabinets with decorative space above.
Always leave some space above cabinets unless you want a full-height look. This gap allows for crown molding and makes the kitchen feel less cramped.
Storage vs. accessibility
Taller wall cabinets give more storage but create reach problems:
- 30" cabinets: Easy to reach all shelves
- 36" cabinets: The top shelf needs a step stool for some people
- 42" cabinets: Top shelves are best for items used rarely
Most people can reach about 70 inches high comfortably. This means that the top shelf of a 36" cabinet (at a total height of 84") may be challenging to use on a daily basis.
Design tips
- Crown molding: Hides gaps between cabinet tops and ceilings. It gives a finished look and prevents dust from settling on top.
- Shorter cabinets: Let you display items or add under-cabinet lighting above. The space breaks up long runs of cabinets.
- Mixed heights: Create visual interest. Use 15" cabinets above sinks and 30-36" cabinets elsewhere.
Special situations
Some kitchens need different cabinet height guidelines:
- Above refrigerators: 12-15" cabinets work well
- Over ranges: Follow manufacturer clearance rules (usually 30" minimum)
- Island cabinets: Can be mounted higher since there is no countertop below
Planning your kitchen cabinet height
Before choosing wall cabinet dimensions, measure your ceiling height and consider who uses the kitchen the most. Shorter family members may prefer 30" cabinets, while taller people can handle 36" or 42" sizes.
Keep in mind that cabinet height significantly impacts the overall kitchen design. Taller cabinets make ceilings look lower. Shorter cabinets with space above feel more open.
The standard wall cabinet height from the floor (54") works for most kitchens. This leaves good working space between counters and cabinets while keeping storage within reach.
Select cabinet heights that align with your storage requirements, ceiling height, and family size. Standard dimensions make replacement and matching easier if you remodel in the future.
