The largest interior design trade show is almost upon us. Here is what you can look forward to this year.
Once again, the world's most critical design and decoration event, the Salone del Mobile, returns in April. As part of Milan Design Week, the event will bring thousands of international design firms to the Italian city and hundreds of thousands of visitors who will travel to Milan between April 16 and 21 to discover the latest trends in design and interior design.
Join us to discover the details we already know about Salone del Mobile 2024 and reveal some surprises that await us at this year's Milan Design Week, from Gucci Design Ancora to the city's key events.
Salone del Mobile 2024
The Salone del Mobile Milano is the main event of Milan Design Week. Held on the city's outskirts in the massive Rho Fiera exhibition center, the event showcases brands from all over the world as they exhibit the latest designs and collections. This year, the Salone will host almost 2,000 design firms in its pavilions. Unlike other editions, it will be marked by a great prominence of kitchen design and emerging designers.
Eurocucina
In 2023, the Salone del Mobile in Milan came hand in hand with Euroluce, the biennial lamp and lighting fair. This year, for its 62nd edition, the Salone hosts Eurocucina – a biennial event for kitchen design firms – and the international bathroom show. At the Salone del Mobile 2024, sustainability will once again play a leading role. Thus, we can expect collections and installations focused on sustainable design or saving water and other resources.
25 Years of SaloneSatellite
In this edition, Salone's young designer feature program turns 25. Known as SaloneSatellite, this space serves as a showcase for new talent in the industry year after year. But at the Salone del Mobile 2024, the Satellite program will have a very special role, from an exhibition analyzing the impact of some of the participants in previous years to a special exhibition at the center of the Milanese fair.
A space by David Lynch
The American filmmaker David Lynch has prepared the immersive installation Thinking Rooms for this edition of the Salone del Mobile. This installation will exploit all the resources of theater, cinema and scenography to create a memorable space that makes its visitors think.
Fuorisalone
Fuorisalone is the name for all the events, samples and exhibitions accompanying the Salone del Mobile at the city center. Some of the big brands participating in the main event—as well as independent gallery owners or small creators—fill the different districts of the city of Milan with fun events throughout the week.
The young lighting firm QU, for example, will open a small temporary showroom with an installation by the Turin artist Salvatore Astore in the garden of a Milanese mansion (Via Cernaia 7, Milan, from April 15 to 21). But the list of events and installations will expand until the beginning of the fair.
Gucci Design Ancora and much more
Don't be surprised to discover the biggest names in the design industry here, as well as the big luxury fashion brands such as Hermès, Prada or Fendi. These great design houses will show their presentations in boutiques throughout the city as part of the Milanese Fuorisalone.
One of the events destined to surprise during this Milan Design Week is Gucci's recently announced Design Ancora project. In this project, the renowned Italian firm will display five iconic Italian design objects in its boutique on Via Montenapoleone in collaboration with the architect Guillermo Santomà. Gucci Design Ancora will follow the line set by the brand's new creative director, the young Italian designer Sabato De Sarno.
Alcova
Another parallel event to the Salone del Mobile 2024 is Alcova, which returns for a new edition. Alcova is a platform for independent design and the most experimental emerging creators. Over the last six years, It has earned a leading space on the Milan Design Week calendar. With each edition, Alcova takes a dilapidated building within the city of Milan and fills it with life through events, exhibitions, and art installations.
On this occasion, the chosen locations are Villa Borsani and Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, a 360º turn in front of the abandoned slaughterhouse of Porta Vittoria that was used as the event venue in 2023. These sumptuous villas - from the mid-20th century and the 19th century, respectively - will be seen energized with the installations of young artists promoted by Alcova, as well as an entire program of talks and performances.
