As the first rays of spring sun appear, it is time to prepare gardens, patios and terraces to enjoy the summer period to the fullest. One key to creating a cozy space in your outdoor space is choosing the right garden furniture. Discover how to use garden furniture to turn this space into an extension of your house and thus enjoy a home with fewer boundaries between exterior and interior.

An extension of your interiors

One of the most powerful interior design trends in recent years is to introduce nature into the home, blurring the division between indoors and outdoors. But this also extends to garden design. Thus, it is possible to take the comfort of our living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms outside. The key is in the furniture, how it is placed in the space, and its finishes or materials.

Defined spaces

As we designate specific areas of our homes like dining room, living room, lounge and so on, why not do the same in our gardens? Creating separate areas with outdoor sofas and armchairs to chat with guests or relax and a dining space helps create a functional garden where space is used as best as possible.

Of course, place the furniture next to the home's entrance, leaving the rest of the garden free. This way, the garden dining room will have easy access from the inside to serve food or drinks. In addition, the rest of the outdoor space can be used for games, sports activities, or much more.

Another piece of garden furniture, perfect for large spaces or for those who want to enjoy their outdoors to the fullest, is a day bed. Thus, delimit a rest area as well, where you can relax or take a nap. This type of garden furniture for relaxing - as are also sun loungers or divans - is ideal for a pool area, where you can dry off in the sun after a swim. Although, of course, it also includes shade sources to be able to enjoy these environments during the hottest moments of summer.

Materials and finishes

Traditionally, outdoor garden furniture has been made of materials such as plastics or wrought iron. And, for upholstery, artificial and processed fabrics were the standard. Thus, for a long time, obtaining durable pieces resistant to inclement weather often meant sacrificing comfort and convenience. However, increasingly, garden furniture offers more elegant and comfortable finishes without losing durability. Technical advances in heavy-duty fabrics have made it possible for garden furniture to be updated with soft, plush upholstery, which is equally durable and easy to clean.

Thus, opting for soft and comfortable fabrics that invite relaxation and rest is essential to bringing the comfort typical of interiors to the garden. As for furniture, industrial materials such as cement or steel are trendy proposals. But you can also opt for natural materials such as wood, terracotta or rattan, which add an organic touch to any design.

Silhouettes and styles

When talking about trends in garden furniture design, pieces with thin and delicate profiles stand out, adding a touch of architectural sophistication to the exterior. Materials such as black aluminum or steel (very popular in interior finishes as well) allow you to create solid and resistant pieces of furniture despite delicate shapes and proportions.

On the other hand—in a completely opposite line—sculptural designs also stand out, such as large dining tables, coffee tables or armchairs. Moldable materials such as clay, cement or glass allow you to create truly sculptural pieces, which add volume and a dramatic and artistic tone to the decoration of any garden.

Flexible lighting

Outdoor lights are essential when furnishing a garden. Beyond the lighting installations on floors and exterior walls, there are table lamps and floor lamps that will help give a dynamic appearance to any patio or garden. Of course, electrical systems and lighting installations are more susceptible to damage from the elements, so it is advisable to choose something that is completely portable and easy to move and store during the winter.

Use small portable outdoor lamps, like the new proposals from Cane-line. These wireless nightlights use small solar panels to sustainably illuminate any outdoor living or dining area at night. These sophisticated little lamps help create atmosphere and delimit the different areas of the garden (one lamp on the dining table, others next to the armchairs).

Organic surfaces and finishes

Natural materials are the trend when choosing flooring and exterior wall finishes—or even the interior surfaces of swimming pools. But despite being elegant and desirable, wood or stones such as limestone or travertine are not always the most practical alternatives for outdoor use.

There are many more resistant alternatives for an outdoor patio, such as terracotta floors or porcelain tiles with organic effects that imitate stone or wood. The new Pietra Triburtina collection, for example, is a tribute to the beauty of travertine or, on the other hand, the beautiful fired clay floors from Fornace Brioni, show all the possibilities of terracotta.
