Dark living room design checklist
The checklist is most useful when read as an order of decisions. Wall and floor finishes set the background, furniture establishes the larger shapes, and textiles adjust how hard or soft the finished room feels.
Designer tips
Make one sample group
Put the wall color, sofa fabric and floor finish together before choosing the rug. A black wall that looks neutral alone may look cooler beside brown wood or warmer beside blue-grey upholstery.
Use the textiles to correct the balance
If the floor and table are smooth, a coarse rug or woven cover will add something missing. If the room already has strong grain and stone veining, a plain textile may be the better choice.
Accessories come after the room works
Treat the final categories as options. A plant or picture can supply the last contrast, but it should not be needed to rescue furniture or finishes that do not sit well together.
